Online price vs the Post Office counter

At the counter you pay USPS's retail price; online you pay its lower commercial price. In our October 2026 price check, a 10 lb box from Los Angeles to New York by Ground Advantage was $40.85 at the counter and $20.37 on ShipGopher, a saving of $20.48 (50%). See the comparison. Priority Mail Express costs about the same either way.

How to buy a USPS label

  1. Open Get a Quote, enter the two ZIP codes and the packed box's weight and size, and select See prices.
  2. Pick a USPS service. USPS, UPS and FedEx are side by side, so you can see whether another carrier is cheaper for this box.
  3. Add both addresses and phone numbers; city and state fill in from the ZIP code. Select Confirm price.
  4. Pay with Apple Pay, Cash App Pay or a card. The label shows on screen right away and is emailed to you with the tracking number.
  5. Print the label and tape it to the box, or show the QR code at the Post Office counter and the clerk prints it for you. Then hand over the box.

Questions

Do I need a USPS.com account?

No, and no ShipGopher account either. USPS's own Click-N-Ship also sells labels online at the same commercial prices with no fee, but it needs a free USPS.com account and is USPS only (see the comparison).

Do I need a printer?

No. Your USPS label comes with a QR code. Show it at the Post Office counter and the clerk prints the label for you (how it works). You can also print it at home.

Where do I drop it off?

At any Post Office. With a printed label taped on, you only hand over the box; with the QR code, the clerk prints the label first.

Is tracking included?

Yes. Every USPS label has a tracking number, sent in your label email, and you can follow the package on the Track page.

Can I cancel the label?

Yes. Use the cancel link in your label email within 28 days, before the package is scanned. You're refunded in full once the carrier confirms the label wasn't used.

What if the package weighs more than I entered?

The carrier may bill the difference, and we charge it to the card you paid with. Weigh it and measure it, rounding up to the next whole inch.
